I have been listening to the radio every morning. The hosts of this radio talk show give Chritmas to a different family who can't afford it) every morning. They ask what their children would want. Most of these families ask for bigger christmas gifts then I even get... Play sets, Motor scooters, golf carts, iphones, etc. But today it was different.

Their was a family whose house burned down the day before Thanksgiving. The mom of the family worked from home making cakes to earn a living. When this tragedy struck, not only did they lose their home but all source of income. One of the friends of the family nominated this family to receive this "Christmas" They brought this lady on the phone and she talked about what happened, always looking on the bright side. When they asked her what she wanted to have for Christmas, she told them to give the money that would have been spent on her to the Angel Tree organizaztion.

I was shocked.

Here is a family who lost everything. Living in a small run down apartment with a kitchen the size of a postage stamp trying to to make cakes for what little money she could get. Her kids not having a single toy. Not one. And she wasn't even the one telling the radio show this. Her nominator was. Not once did she brag about her situation and ho

And what did she ask for? Nothing. I felt greedy. I have so much and yet do I ask to give what I want to the Angel Tree? Of course not. I look up to her so much.

Always smiling.
Always looking on the bright side.
The true spirit of Christmas.

*And.. if you want to know what happened to her here it is: Kid Kraddick (the radio show) donated $500 in her name to the angel tree. They gave her a gift card to Toys-R-Us to buy toys for her kids and even gave her a rent out kitchen with all the supplies she needs to make the cakes until they can get back on their feet. She started bawling. Thanking them for everything. Does that just make you smile or what? :)

Fall Fun

November 1, 2010

I find there are lots of people I look up to in this world.

One in particular. Ever since I met her I have looked up to her.

Picture this...
Beautiful Smile
Cheerleader
Homecoming Queen
Gorgeous
Fun to be around
Smart
Popular
Modest
High Standards
Confident
Friendly

Pretty much perfect right?
Well... Today she decided to wear a dress. It was cute, really cute.
Red.
Silk.
Absolutely gorgeous
But it was also...
Too short
Sleevless
Low cut

My respect for her dropped. She never knew how much I watched her and looked up to her. And something as simple as this caused my respect for her to drop. You never know who is watching you. Something as simple as the clothes you wear. It makes me want to do better in all I do.

Everything I say.
Everything I do.
Everything I wear.

Because people are watching me whether I think it or not. :)

Glazed Fabric Button Ring Tutorial

Fabric Button Rings
Your favorite fabric scraps in 2 x2 inch pieces
7/8 inch cover button kit
Triple Thick Brush on Gloss Glaze (or Outdoor Modge Podge might work well too)
Adjustable ring blanks WITH pads
Paint brush
Pliers
Rotary cutter and mat

First, pull the hooks for the back part of the buttons with a pair of pliers

To pull the hook off, squeeze and pull the hook with your pliers...they should pop right out.
Then, follow the instructions on the back of the button package to cover your button.
Easy peasy lemon squeezy!!

Then, get your Triple Thick Glaze out and paint one coat on your fabric. Wait 10 minutes and then do a second coat...then let dry for 24 hours before you finish putting your ring together.

I put some toothpicks in a styrofoam ball to hang my buttons to dry.

See, the empty hook holes make the perfect toothpick holders!!

After 24 hours of drying time, take your ring blank and dab some hot glue on the ring pad. Press your button on top and let dry till nice and tight.

Yup, right there on the ring pad...glue it up folks!

So pretty...

And customizable...

So cute huh? Worth a try? You may be getting these from me for birthday/Christmas gifts. Just a warning.. :)

I was thinking the other day what the definition of home is.
So I looked it up.

Home: a house, apartment, or other shelter that is the usual residence of a person, family, or household.

That is it?
That means my home could be Antarctica as long as I have shelter.. right?
Wrong.
I think home is different. You can have more then one home. And those homes include the people, school, all your surroundings.
I think I have 3.
Utah.
Arizona.
Texas.
And sometimes I miss some of my homes. Especially the people.
A lot.

And who knows? Maybe I will make a home in Antarctica someday. :)

True Beauty

"But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as a man seeth; for a man loooketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart."

When I was reading my scriptures this morning I came to this scripture. It made me think. I thought about how the world sees women. Hair, Makeup, Clothes. And then I thought about how God sees women. He doesn't care about that... only the inside. I care about clothes, makeup, and hair. A lot. Maybe too much?

There is this show that I like to watch called True Beauty. The contestants on the show think they are being judged on how they look. But throughout the show there are hidden cameras watching how they treat other people. Sometimes the contestants are offered to cheat. In the end the contestants who have "True Beauty" win. Sometimes I think I am like these contestants... oblivious to what is going on. I am too focused on by outer beauty. The hidden cameras (Heavenly Father) aren't looking on my outer beauty. They are looking for my "True Beauty."

I kinda LOVE this girl.

I spent a week with her. An Entire week. EVERY moment together.
Sleepovers.
Swimming.
Shopping.
Watching cute chick flicks with Irish men.
Eating.
Texting.
Or just laying around doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
And you would think I would get sick of her right?
Wrong. NEVER. I could spend an entire month with this girl...
(except for the fact that I would become obese)
....and not get sick of her.
That says A LOT.
I love her.
And many guys do too... Considering we are going to EFY together in two days (another whole week with her beautiful face)
and EVERY single boy will fall in love with her.
You just wait. I will prove it.
So Brook? Thank you for putting up with me for an Entire week. Thank you for the wonderful surprise Party. Thank you for taking my stuff that couldnt fit in my suitcase. Thank you for loving me for who I am. And most of all?
Thank you for being my best friend.
I love you. Lots and lots. :)

Today is the day to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the day when I first became a sister.
At every fountain I threw a penny. I watched for every first star.
Lots of wishes and prayers were spent.
She was a dream come true.
And I still love her.
And today is the day to celebrate.

Dear Kayla,

I know that you are going through some rough times. I know that life isn't always rainbows and butterflies. I know that your heart aches for all that you left behind. I know that sometimes you wish that things were different than they are now.
But thanks so much for making the decision to come to earth. Thanks for trying your hardest. Thanks for teaching me. Thanks for being my friend.
Thanks for being my sister.
Keep being the best you can be. I know that you can do hard things. Your future is bright.

I'm here for you.
Happy 15th birthday! I love you.

Love, your sister.

Lindsey wrote this on her blog to me for my birthday. You have no idea how happy it made me. I grined. I giggled. I even did a little happy dance. I really do have the best older sister anyone could possibly have. She is my best friend. I love her. :)

Birthday Phillosophy

Many people have asked me what I want for my birthday and I reply the same way.
Nothing.
But of course they don't listen and they get me something.
...So let me explain my Birthday Philosophy..
For the longest time people have expected gifts for their birthday.
You MUST get a gift if you are going to a birthday party.

It is expected.
I don't want people to feel obligated to give me a present. Hence why I always write "No gifts please" on the bottom of my invitations
So here is my Philosophy.
Gifts are very nice, when unexpected.
The best kind of gifts are the kind that people don't HAVE to give to you. They just decide to give you one. So friends? If you decide to give me a gift that is very nice of you and I will be most gracious. But... If you don't get me one? Trust me, I will not be hurt or offended or think that someone else is a better friend then you. Thank you all for being such good friends. I love you dearly.
As for Surprises?
Same thing.
Surprises are nice. Quite Nice. but if you talk about them non stop saying "I am doing a surprise for you..|" or "I HAVE to do something..." That takes the surprise away so if you are going to do a surprise the best way is to say nothing. Nothing whatsoever. Those kind of surprises? I like. Other kind? Not so much.

This may come as a surprise to most of you but I get mad... Oh yes. It is occasional, but I do. Right now I have that feeling that nobody listens to me. Nobody cares. The feeling when I just want to live like a hermet crab all alone in my room, for the rest of my life. Perhaps even hybernate. I really honestly don't know what to do... no matter what I say. Someone gets mad. Oh dear.. .My positiveness is desinigrating.... I need a confidence booster. Perhaps I will count my blessings and then call my bestie. That always seems to make me feel better. :) Until then... Nobody talk to me....Please. It is for your own good.

Today in class my teacher was comparing Alcohol to drugs.
He asked this question:
"If you had to pick Alcohol or Marijuana which would you pick? Who would pick Alcohol?"
The entire class raised their hand except two people.
"Who would pick Marijuana?"
One person raised their hand. I kept my hand down. All eyes were glued on me. "Mikayla, How come you didn't pick one?"
"Because I wouldn't do either."
"Neither?, Not even if you had to?"
"Nope."
"May I ask why?"
"That is the way I have been raised."
"You mean your parents don't drink?"
"No, Sir."
"I see...."
It ended there.
However my brain kept thinking about this. Why do people glamorize it so much? The ENTIRE class had raised their hand for one of the two. I was the only one. Everyone else drinks? Or desires to drink?

Later, in my next period we were talking about families. I was asked how many siblings I had. "Seven, including me." I stated, as usual. I got the usual response. "SEVEN KIDS?!?!?!" The usual after question. "Are you Mormon?" Just the usual.

But I couldn't stop thinking about it.
This is the first time that I have been all alone. Every other time I have had other LDS people around me. In my classes. In my church. In my home. Everywhere. I never realized it but the population of the church is a lot smaller here. I have to stand up for my standards even when those around me have such different ways of life. Way Different. I am being exposed to a different way of life. It may be harder now but I can still do it. I am not alone. The lord is on my side. Well isn't that a happy thought. :)
